Top 3 Halloween Treats: David Lynch, Leyland Kirby & Dope Jams

To get you in a suitably creepy mood for imminent Halloween 2013 celebration here are Top 3 carefully chosen and genuinely unsettling audio-visual experiences for you.

1. David Lynch cooks quinoa.

According to the United Nations General Assembly 2013 has been named the International Year Of Quinoa. World-renowned master of the macabre David Lynch is as devoted to this grain-like crop of the goosefoot family as he is to the transcendental meditation.

Suitably this week saw his "quinoa-cooking" videos originally intended for "Inland Empire" DVD extras resurfacing on YouTube. Needless to say that they are extremely bizarre and entertaining in director's trademark dark humour way. You know what you have to eat this Halloween then.

2. The Stranger "Watching Dead Empires In Decay" 2013 | Modern Love

Not really feeling like camp classics to soundtrack your costume prep? Tired of Ministry's "Everyday Is Halloween" and old good horror-soundtracks? Well there is nothing quite as essential as new music from Leyland Kirby. Producer most widely-known for his "The Shining"-inspired dissection of dancehall-era standards under the code-name Caretaker.  His freshly-released effort under resurrected alias The Stranger is as bleak as you expected it to be. No Caretaker cuteness this time, only disorienting experimental music that doesn't sound like anything else released in the past few years. Just look at the cover adorning the cover... You are in for the relentlessly hellish sensory assault. Stream the album below courtesy of increasingly esoteric label Modern Love.

3. Dope Jams presents Slow To Speak Halloween Mix

If you didn't know Dope Jams is a cult vinyl store that used to be Brooklyn's staple for dance-music lovers. The store was also famous for having a sizeable stock of occult books and paraphernalia. Not surprisingly their Halloween parties are the stuff of legends. I have personally been a witness to a few of Francis Englehardt and Paul Nickerson (the owners) non-Halloween dj-gigs outside of their NY lair and it's an unmissable treat.

Last year their brick-and-mortar operation in Brooklyn got shot down because of rent-related issues, but thankfully re-opened in the new upstate New York location. Guys always share freebies on All Saints Eve occasion. Also to advertise their aforementioned Samhain costume balls and if you are searching for a perfect soundtrack to your Halloween party or face-painting routine you have just found nearly 7 hours of first-grade debonaire dance, industrial, goth, punk and perverted pop music. Tracklist features over-the-top eclectic range of artists including projects as unrelated as Einstürzende Neubauten, St. Etienne, Neil Landstrumm, Pink Floyd, Nas and Pearl Jam. Grab or stream it below.
