Popol Vuh - Hosianna Mantra (Wah Wah) LP + 7"

Popol Vuh third album is a complete departure from wild electronic experiments of their earlier output towards elegant and classic-leaning composition employing piano, oboe, violin, tamboura and operatic vocal.

It is well-publicized fact that despite connection to usually secular German rock underground Fricke was a deeply religious man.  With the third Popol Vuh album he got rid of synthesizers and assembled the cast of classical instruments musicians and soprano vocalist Djong Yun. Prominent piano figures are played by Fricke himself.

There is no denying that this is majestic music, much more befitting spiritual leanings of project's main ideologist and members than space jams and experimentalism of the first two albums. This is as classicist as Popol Vuh and german avant-rock music in general would ever be. The only equivalent that I could think of would be main theme of Popol Vuh's own soundtrack for Werner Herzog documentary "The Great Ecstasy Of The Woodcarver Steiner". Sadly never released.
